In the vortex of knowledge - video artist Betty Mü with works in the Am Wiedfang studio and on the facade of the Historical Museum

Inspiring, courageous and full of life - these are the works of the internationally in-demand video artist Betty Mü. Visitors can immerse themselves in the extraordinary art of the Munich-based artist at two locations: In the Am Wiedfang studio, the artist is showing VORTEX - artworks made of glass that develop a dazzling life of their own using the Artivive app. For the facade of the Historisches Museum, Mü worked on the allegorical figures of a historical painting as video mapping:
“INSIDE / OUT - LOVE, PEACE, JUSTICE, STRENGTH, WISDOM”.

Opening of the exhibition at the Atelier am Wiedfang is on April 3 at 7 p.m. - Finissage on April 30 with an artist talk by the artist.

VORTEX - a hypnotic narrative
VORTEX (Latin for vortex, whirlpool) - this is what Betty Mü calls the circular glass panels that show abstract and surreal motifs. The installation in the studio at Wiedfang is reminiscent of large kaleidoscopes in space.
Betty Mü uses the Artivive app to merge the surfaces of her VORTEX panes with moving images. Anyone who installs the app on their cell phone and points it at the vortex disc is drawn into the vortex of a hypnotic narrative.

How painted figures come to life
On the initiative of donumenta e. V., Munich-based video artist Betty Mü has reworked five allegorical female figures from the historical painting “The Good Regiment” (1592) by Isaac Schwendner. In her work “INSIDE / OUT - LOVE, PEACE, JUSTICE, STRENGTH, WISDOM”, Betty Mü animates the virtues of love, peace, justice, strength and wisdom depicted in the painting. Self-confident and strong, she places them in a new context.

Betty Mü detaches the allegorical figures from their historical context, frees them from traditional symbolism and finally uses AI to create a moving, contemporary representation. In this way, the five virtues become self-confident women in the here and now. “On the museum facade, each of these female figures unfolds its own power,” says Regina Hellwig-Schmid about the installation by Betty Mü. - On view from April 3 to 30 on the west facade of the Historical Museum of the City of Regensburg on Dachauplatz from 8:00 pm to 11:00 pm.

Installation “VORTEX” by Betty Mü in the Atelier am Wiedfang in Regensburg

Betty Mü INSIDE / OUT - LOVE, PEACE, JUSTICE, STRENGTH, WISDOM

Women's rights are human rights are basic rights.

On the initiative of donumenta e. V., video artist Betty Mü has reworked five allegorical female figures from the historical painting “The Good Regiment” by Isaac Schwendner (1592) and projects them into the public space. The original has been hanging in Regensburg's Old City Hall since 1627.

In her work INSIDE / OUT - LOVE, PEACE, JUSTICE, STRENGTH, WISDOM

Betty Mü animates the virtues of love, peace, justice, strength and wisdom depicted in the historical painting. Self-confident and strong, the video artist places them in a new context. To mark International Women's Day, the work will be premiered on March 8 at 8.30 pm on the west side of the Historical Museum of the City of Regensburg on Dachauplatz.

The Original

In 1592, the painter and building authority assessor Isaac Schwendner painted his work “The Good Regiment” in bright, vibrant colors. The large-format painting shows the structure of a votive image. The city magistrate, symbolized by the coats of arms of its members at the edge of the picture, prays to God, who is enthroned above the city in a gloriole of clouds. May he provide the city council with love, justice, wisdom, peace and strength for the good governance of the city. - So much for the historical reference.

Confident female figures

The video artist Betty Mü removes the figures from their historical context and thus changes their meaning. Freed from the patriarchal symbolism of the male-occupied city council, which calls upon the God the Father enthroned above all for a happy hand for good city government, the five virtues on the facade of the Historical Museum take on a life of their own.
LOVE, PEACE, JUSTICE, STRENGTH and WISDOM thus become female role models and self-confident women. “Each of these female figures unfolds its own power on the museum facade,” says Regina Hellwig-Schmid about Betty Mü's installation.

Artwork for Regensburg

From the five large mullioned windows on the east facade of the Historical Museum of the City of Regensburg at Dachauplatz, a mother and child now look out for LOVE, another lives as she lives and fights with scales and sword for JUSTICE, equality and inclusion. In another window, the third with a snake promotes WISDOM and the knowledge of so many women in politics, society and science. “And what would everything be without PEACE,” warns the fourth. “May love, justice, wisdom and peace multiply fruitfully and turn into STRENGTH,” advises a fifth with a sceptre and grain sieve.

Desirable for all genders

Do the bars on the selected windows of the Historical Museum represent the boundary to unrestricted and equal participation? At the very least, they are a reminder that the unconditional recognition of female strength is still a vision. Men still keep women in check. There is a glass ceiling in companies, male territorial thinking dominates in science, as it does in politics and many other sectors of society. In its current interpretation, Betty Mü's animation based on the painting by Isaac Schwendner visualizes desirable characteristics for all genders.
