Danube – where to? A cradle of European Culture and its Future

International symposium of the donumenta network on art and culture in the Danube Region. In the scope of donumenta 2011 – Serbia in Regensburg.

The Danube Region is one of the most fascinating macro regions in Europe. This greater area consists of 115 million people living in 14 participant states with different cultures and identities as well as economic and ecological procedures. On the occasion of the recently concluded EU Strategy for the Danube Region, political, economic and cultural actions gain importance for the people living in the greater area. The public and international symposium "Danube – where to? A cradle of European Culture and its Future" under the patronage of the Bavarian Minister President Horst Seehofer and supported by Emilia Müller, State Minister for Federal and European Affairs at the Bavarian State Chancellery and Representative of the State of Bavaria to the Federation, offered an up-to-date occasion to go further into detail.

Emerging from donumenta's network, the festival, which has been presenting up-to-date art and culture from the Danube countries in Regensburg for nine years, approximately 40 artists, curators, authors, scientists and leaders of institutes from the countries of the Danube Region met in the Kunstforum Ostdeutsche Galerie in Regensburg from Oct 20th to 22nd under the leadership of Regina Hellwig-Schmid, Chair of donumenta e.V and Dr. Konrad Clewing, Deputy Director, Institute for Southeast European Studies. Together with an interested audience perspectives of cultural policy and arts, cross border cooperation and curatorial concepts in the Danube Region were discussed. Art and culture became visible as key elements of the EU Danube Strategy.
