Guide to the augmented reality of the historic old town

App leads to the donumenta artworks in the UNESCO World Heritage Site

When the virtual world connects with the real world, we are talking about augmented reality. donumenta Regensburg e.V. has developed an app for the UNESCO World Heritage Site that connects art in public spaces with the historic old town - augmented and virtual, via smartphone or tablet. Now there are also guideposts.

At four locations (Steinerne Brücke by the traffic lights on the south side, Stadtamhof by the northern city gate, Thundorferstraße by the museum ship, at the train station by the entrance) in Regensburg's historic old town, pedestrians have recently come across blue signs with an arrow and the words “donumenta VR/AR art location” as well as a QR code. Anyone who scans the QR code can use the app to navigate to places where artistic interventions initiated by donumenta e.V. have already been realized. With the help of the app and augmented reality technology, these works become visible, even if they have already been removed.

The app shows what artists from 14 Danube countries have created in the donumenta Artist in Residence program in recent years. During their stay in Regensburg, they explore the history of the city, re-evaluate and show what has slipped from the collective memory.
