Danilo Milovanović / DNLM "Translated Standards" Schwanenplatz, Regensburg

With his installation at Schwanenplatz in Regensburg, Slovenian artist Danilo Milovanović aka DNLM creates a new perspective on the historical units of measurement fathom, cubit and shoe, which are visible at the portal of the Old Town Hall in Regensburg. He used them as three spatial dimensions - width, height and length - to which he adapted some of Regensburg's street furniture. He sees street furniture as a kind of common thread - a standard of public space that is present throughout the city, while the dimensions represent historical standards. DNLM combined them in a subtle but stimulating contrast to the modern street furniture, creating a playful public installation that raises awareness of what the establishment of these historical measures once meant. The artist questions the use of public space in the modern city, which is mostly subordinated to established standards and functionalism, without much opportunity for spontaneity and experimentation.
